Sjögren’s Syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disease notably leading to a progressive disappearance of tears and saliva. 

Sjögren’s is a chronic disease with the most various expressions and can affect the entire body. 

In autoimmunity, the patient’s immune system mounts an inflammatory response for still unclear reasons. Becoming overactive, it attacks and destroys certain components, substances and tissues it is supposed to defend.

In Sjögren’s Syndrome, the immune system mainly targets exocrine glands and more specifically lachrymal and salivary glands. Patients consequently experience intense oral and ocular dryness.

Patients usually also experience general symptoms like extreme fatigue and joint pain. Lungs, kidneys, liver and other vital organs might be affected as well.

Most patients are women (9/10). At present, no causal curative treatment exists for Sjögren’s Syndrome.
